Hair Restoration Techniques

Probably one of the most embarrassing condition in the world today is hair loss. As soon as a person notices that their hair is falling out they immediately start thinking of ways to reverse it. One treatment method most people often consider right off the bat is surgery. Surgical procedures provide immediate results and can be helpful if you choose the right surgeon. However, hair transplant surgery can be pretty expensive and if done incorrectly can leave behind ugly scars that look worse than a bald spot.

Any doctor will recommend using medications before you decide to undergo surgery. The doctor will need to find out what's causing your hair loss in order to provide you with the right medication to regrow hair. Around ninety percent of your hair is in the growing phase, which will last for around 5 years. The other ten percent is in fall out phase, which is natural. In the growth phase each hair follicle will continue to grow each month and enter the rest phase once it has reached it's full size. After a certain amount of time these fully grown hair follicles will fall out and get replaced by new growth. This is a continuing process which explains why humans lose around 100 hairs each day.

Hair loss problems begin if you start to lose an excessive amount of hair each day. If you brush or comb your hair and notice huge patches in the hair brush then you're experiencing hair loss. Also, if you notice that new hair strands are slow to replace the old ones then you are experiencing the beginning stage of baldness. The most common cause of hair loss is male pattern baldness, which is due to DHT. Your doctor will prescribe a medication to help stop the production of DHT if male pattern baldness is what you're experiencing. The first medication prescribed to treat hair loss and stop the production of the male hormone DHT is Propecia. Propecia has been approved by the FDA to treat hair loss in men and women. It works by inhibiting the enzyme responsible for producing DHT in the scalp and follicles of the hair.

Since hair loss is becoming more and more of a common problem each year doctors are always coming up with new ways to treat the problem. As a result there are numerous medications, supplements, herbs, oils, and shampoos that have been designed to treat this condition. Even though there is no official cure for hair loss, medications can help slow down the balding you're experiencing and reduce your hair thinning problem.

Other than propecia, the other FDA approved treatment for hair loss is minoxidili or rogaine. This treatment is mostly used to treat male pattern baldness and is not commonly used for female pattern baldness. One treatment approved to help women experiencing hair loss is spironolactone. Spironolactone is a high estrogen oral contraceptive that stops the hair from falling out. These medications help promote new growth and help strengthen the existing hair on your scalp. Keep in mind that these medications don't work for everyone.
